The Government of Nepal has initiated a major infrastructure project aimed at expanding the East-West Highway, one of the busiest road networks in the country. The project, which officially began construction this week, seeks to reduce travel time, improve road safety, and boost trade and tourism.
The expansion includes the addition of new lanes, modern road signs, and safety barriers along high-risk stretches. The project is funded jointly by the Nepalese government and international development partners, with an estimated budget exceeding NPR 60 billion.
Officials confirmed that priority will be given to sections of the highway that have been prone to traffic congestion and accidents. The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has assured the public that strict safety measures will be implemented to minimize disruptions during construction.
Local residents and business owners have expressed optimism, noting that improved connectivity will increase trade opportunities and make transportation more efficient. However, some have raised concerns about the environmental impact of such a large-scale project. Authorities responded by promising eco-friendly construction methods and reforestation programs.
The project is expected to be completed in five years, making it one of the largest infrastructure undertakings in Nepal’s recent history.
